💡 Adviser insight

Officers can usually get own-occupation income protection, but Personal Sick Pay and the critical-illness disability benefit are often restricted, and specialist roles such as police divers are declined. That makes the income protection benefit the part that does the work.

The Risks Police Officers Need to Plan For

Policing is physically and psychologically demanding. Here's what to plan for beyond your pension.

🚨

Frontline injury

Assaults, restraint injuries and pursuits carry real physical risk.

🧠

PTSD & trauma

Exposure to traumatic incidents makes mental health cover essential.

💷

Pension gaps

The police pension helps, but rarely fully replaces income or clears a mortgage during long-term illness.

Shift work strain

Rotating shifts affect long-term health and wellbeing.

The Right Protection for Police Officers

Based on the specific risks of your profession, here's what we typically recommend — ranked by priority.

Police Officer FAQs — Life Insurance & Income Protection

Common questions UK police officers ask about protecting their income and family.

Does my police pension already cover me?
It includes ill-health and death benefits, but these rarely clear a full mortgage or replace income during a long illness. Top-up cover bridges the gap.
Is PTSD or stress covered for police officers?
Yes — with the right income protection, trauma and stress-related absence can be claimed, which matters in frontline policing.
How much does income protection cost for a police officer?
Often from around £10–£25 a month depending on the benefit and deferred period, set to start when your force sick pay reduces.
Will frontline duties raise my premium?
Some insurers load it; we know which ones treat officers fairly so you are not overcharged.
Can I keep my cover if I leave the force?
Yes. Personal policies move with you regardless of your employer.
How much life insurance does a police officer need?
Enough to clear the mortgage and support your family beyond the pension's death benefits; we calculate it with you.

Police Officer-specific questions, answered properly

The operational detail that decides claims for police officers — sick pay schemes, licences, contracts and the wording that matters.

How do the police pension ill-health tiers actually work?
Broadly, a lower tier applies where you are permanently unable to perform ordinary police duties, and a higher tier where you are also unable to undertake regular employment more generally. The assessment is against scheme rules by a selected medical practitioner, and the outcome determines the level of benefit.
Is an injury on duty award the same as income protection?
No. An injury award is a police scheme benefit relating to injuries received in the execution of duty, assessed under its own criteria and degrees of disablement. Income protection is a separate contract with your insurer that pays a monthly benefit while illness or injury stops you working, whatever the cause.
Does my cover continue if I am medically retired?
The policy continues while premiums are paid, but income protection benefits are designed to replace earnings from work. If you are medically retired and receiving a pension, the claimable benefit may be reduced or cease depending on the wording. It is one of the more important clauses to check.
Would PTSD from an incident at work be claimable?
With a policy that includes mental health cover, generally yes, provided it is diagnosed and stops you working. Given the exposure in frontline policing this is one of the most relevant features for officers, and the strength of the mental health wording varies noticeably between insurers.
Are firearms officers or specialist units treated differently?
Sometimes. Standard policing is widely quotable, but firearms, public order, marine and diving units can be assessed more cautiously, and police divers are frequently declined by mainstream insurers. Describing the specific role rather than simply saying police officer is what gets these placed properly.
Can I keep the policy if I transfer to another force or leave policing?
Yes. A personal policy belongs to you and is unaffected by which force employs you or by leaving the service entirely. That portability is one of its main advantages over relying solely on scheme benefits, which end when your service does.
Do police staff and PCSOs get the same terms as warranted officers?
Often better ones, because the roles typically involve less confrontation risk. PCSOs and police staff in administrative or control room roles are usually rated closer to ordinary employment. It is worth being explicit about the role, as it can produce more flexible terms.
