The UK protection gap: why millions are still underinsured in 2026
Britain is chronically underinsured against death and long-term illness. The gap is narrowing โ slowly โ but it is still very real.
The protection gap is the difference between the cover families would need to stay financially stable and what they actually have. It is widest exactly where it hurts most: renters, the self-employed, single-income households and people who assume workplace or state support will catch them.
Several things keep it open. Many people overestimate the cost of cover, assume past health issues rule them out, or simply never get round to it. Others have some life insurance but nothing to replace income if illness stops them working โ the part of the gap that has grown fastest.
The encouraging trend in 2026 is awareness. Conversations about financial resilience, profession-specific cover and flexible income protection are reaching people who were previously ignored by mainstream providers โ including manual trades and gig workers who were often quoted unfairly or declined online.
